Introduction to St Oswalds

In 1898, my grandfather, John James Newport produced the first edition of a small book on Hooe Church giving its history and a description of the architecture and fittings. I never thought, when I started this website, that I would ever be able to add anything to what he had written in that book but, as I looked further into the subject, I began to find old records of which my grandfather, probably, wouldn't have been aware, and, in some cases, couldn't have been aware.

My grandfather, in his book, covered the architecture, structure, and history of the church far better than I ever could, with my lack of knowledge of such matters (though I'm learning!). Other people have, also, written books on the church and some of these I will read, and where they give information that my grandfather hasn't, and which I feel should be included, I will add here. Generally, however, my intention is to only add those parts that no one has been interested in enough to write about but which, none-the-less, affected the church, greatly.

In spite of what I have said, about my lack of knowledge, I did research the subject of Hooe Church for many years (albeit slowly!) and have chosen some areas of the architecture to add what I can to what others have written. I still, however, have many questions that I can't, at the moment, answer.
