HOOE - A Carnival

(from the Bexhill Chronicle – 23rd June 1900)

A CARNIVAL - on Wednesday last the village enjoyed one of the now very popular carnival's. This was carried out very successfully -- in fact, beyond the expectations of the most sanguine. Early in the evening the members began to show themselves, and by 7.30 had gathered together very well. Accompanied by the Ninfield Band, the procession wended its way round the parish, calling at several residences en route. A striking feature was the number of mounted gentlemen in khaki. Besides these there was a "cannon" drawn by "Jack Tars", some infantry, an ambulance waggon, effigies of ex-Presidents Kruger and Steyn and, police, etc. With the addition of Chinese lanterns and coloured fire to show the way, the effect was much enhanced. Having concluded the tour and collected a good sum of money, the effigies were burnt on the common with display fireworks, patriotic airs, and hurrahs.
