The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent charge £249, gross yearly value £308, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of Oswald Forster Routh esq. and held since 1889 by the Rev. The manor of Hooe being given to the Abbey of Bec in Normandy, by Henry, Earl of Ewe, between A.D. 1096 and 1139, there was shortly after erected here an alien priory of Benedictine monks, attached to that foreign house, though sometimes reckoned as a parcel of Okeburn, its principal cell in England. The Earl of Ashburnham, the Hon. Thomas Allnut Brassey, J. P. of Battle, who is lord of the manor, Sir James Duke, bart., and Edward Pennefather, esq. are the largest landowners.
