HOOE - is a parish 6 miles south-west from Battle, 10 west from Hastings, 11 east-north-east: from Eastbourne, 10 south-east from Hailsham, and about 4 1/2 north-east from Pevensey station on the Hastings branch of the London, Brighton and South Coast railway, in the Eastern division of the county, Ninfield hundred, Hastings rape and county court district, Battle petty sessional division, Hailsham union, rural deanery of Hastings (first division), and archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. The Church of St. James is an ancient edifice of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, a small chapel on the north side and a low and massive embattled western tower containing 5 bells; there is a piscine in the south wall, and the church affords 250 sittings. The register dates from 1531. The living is a vicarage, average tithe rent-charge £249, gross yearly value £308, with residence and 3 acres of glebe, in the gift of Oswald Forster Routh esq. and held since 1889 by the Rev. Cuthbert Routh M.A. of Queen′s College, Oxford. A fair for cattle is held here on May 1st. The manor of Hooe being given to the Abbey of Bec in Normandy, by Henry, Earl of Ewe, between A.D. 1096 and 1139, there was shortly after erected here an alien priory of Benedictine monks, attached to that foreign house, though sometimes reckoned as a parcel of Okeburn, its principle cell in England. The Earl of Ashburnharn, the hon. Thomas Allnut Brassey, J.P.. of Battle, who is lord of the manor, Sir James Duke, bart., and Edward Pennefather esq. are the largest landowners. The chief crops are wheat and hops. The area is 2,473 acres; rateable value £2,877; the population in 1881 was 470.
